Brief Summary
This roundtable discussion will focus on "Strategies to Increase Awareness and Use of NVDRS data." The National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) is a critical public health surveillance tool funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that allows states to improve their understanding of the circumstances surrounding violent deaths in their communities.  The NVDRS makes better use of data that are already being collected by health, law enforcement, and social service agencies.  Funding from the CDC allows states to collect and link together data that, when kept in separate compartments, is much less valuable as a tool to characterize and monitor violent deaths.  Data collected through NVDRS has important implications for violence prevention reserach and is being used to inform state violence prevention programs.  During this session, participants will learn about the NVDRS program and will have an opportunity to hear from and interact with public health officials who have conducted violence prevention research using this rich NVDRS data set.
