BACKGROUND: Twenty-three states participate in the CDC/National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health state occupational health surveillance program, carrying out 49 occupational injury and illness projects. State and federal partners meet semi-annually to exchange information and knowledge necessary to coordinate, integrate, and strengthen federal and state occupational health (OH) surveillance programs. The annual meeting of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists serves as an excellent venue for one of these meetings.
METHODS: The purpose of this meeting is to convene NIOSH and state OH surveillance leaders and professionals to a) exchange ideas for OH surveillance program development, b) coordinate federal and state OH surveillance activities and priorities, c) support methods and practices for generating and disseminating OH Indicators, project-specific/priority focus area (PFA) data and/or emerging issues and, in general, e) foster effective communication for the protection of workers in the U.S.
RESULTS: This meeting will include updates and technical information about state and state-federal collaborative projects including: use of BRFSS survey data that includes the Industry/Occupation I/O module; activities of the Center for Workers Compensation Studies and other workers’ compensation projects; ongoing activities related to the integration of I/O into electronic health records; coordination/collaboration with specific NIOSH/CDC programs; and regional and winter meeting planning.
CONCLUSIONS: This session serves as an annual meeting of CDC’s state OH surveillance programs and facilitates ongoing collaborative efforts between CDC/NIOSH and state OH surveillance partners. All state program staff conducting occupational health surveillance activities can contribute to this meeting. In addition, states conducting OH activities but not currently funded by CDC/NIOSH are welcome to participate in this meeting.
