BACKGROUND: The FDA Electronic Laboratory Network (eLEXNET) is an integrated, secure network that makes food and feed-testing data from local, state and federal laboratories accessible to laboratorians, analysts, epidemiologists and risk assessors across the food safety system.

METHODS: Investigators can use eLEXNET's powerful analytical tools to explore testing results by laboratory, state, or agency.  With the interactive map and search features of the IDAT, investigators can quickly zero in on the contaminant of concern. Moreover, the system's communities provide a convenient and secure mechanism for collaborating across jurisdictions.

RESULTS: FDA will describe specific use cases for eLEXNET, including how a local or state jurisdiction can take advantage of eLEXNET to share data internally between laboratory and food safety analysts during an outbreak investigation. The eLEXNET development team will present a brief demonstration of the system, including the data upload process and the customizable dashboard. Finally, FDA will share eLEXNET's roadmap for the next 5 years and explain how state epidemiologists and food safety analysts can get involved.

CONCLUSIONS: The overarching goal of the Food Safety Management Act (FSMA) of 2011 is to shift the food safety system in the United States from a reactive to a proactive paradigm.  FDA has made considerable enhancements to eLEXNET over the last several years to position eLEXNET as an important component of this new model. This presentation provides epidemiologists an opportunity to learn more about the eLEXNET system and the collaborative approach to food safety that it offers.  FDA is strongly interested in increasing awareness of eLEXNET as a tool for food safety analysts, investigators, and epidemiologists.
