Key Objectives:
- Begin planning the consensus process for updating the Injury Indicators as a component of the CSTE Indicators.
- To build partnership for the development of a CSTE position statement.
Brief Summary:
The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention annually publishes standardized instructions for preparing State Injury Indicator data. These instructions are based in the consensus work of CSTE, Safe States Alliance and state partners (http://www.cdc.gov/injury/pdfs/2013_state_injury_indicator_instructions-a.pdf). The consensus process and CSTE position statement are an important component of ensuring that injury surveillance methods can be shared across jurisdictions. In October 2015, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services required that all hospitals and health care providers covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act use the Clinical Modification of the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD–10–CM) when reporting medical diagnosis information. The selection criteria and methodology for calculating the hospitalization and emergency department injury indicators require updating to reflect this transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM. Attendees will participate in a focused discussion to plan both the development and implementation of the ICD-10-CM based Injury Indicators. The goal of the conversation is to determine partners, a timeline, and a communication process.
