BACKGROUND:  In 2016, the CDC/CSTE Antimicrobial Resistance Taskforce was formed pursuant to CSTE Position Statement 13-SI-01. The long-term goal of the Taskforce is to develop a strategic plan for ARS surveillance. The presentation will cover a review of the CSTE Position Statement 13-SI-01 followed by an overview of the purpose, structure, and work to date of the Taskforce. The work of the Taskforce will be presented focusing on two areas: 1) summary of the preliminary discussion of the purposes and methods of ARS at state, local and federal levels; and 2) review of draft recommendations/guidelines for transmission of comprehensive microbiological results from clinical laboratories for both facility and community-based surveillance to alleviate the current practice of suppression of this information in laboratory reports.

METHODS:  The Taskforce will meet in spring 2016. The presentation will focus on the two areas described above.

RESULTS:  Dr. Birkhead will briefly review CSTE Position Statement 13-SI-01, and then overview the purpose, structure and work to date of the Taskforce. Preliminary formulation will be made of the purposes and methods of ARS and of guidelines for transmission of complete laboratory information for clinical and public health use.

CONCLUSIONS:  This presentation will inform CSTE members of the current state of the Taskforce deliberations. The discussion following the presentation will provide an opportunity for input from CSTE members.
