Occupational Health II - Drilling Down with Oil and Water: Worker Safety and Health Trends

This panel will provide an overview of trends in U.S. oil and gas extraction worker deaths over recent years. An overview of the epidemiology of oil and gas worker fatalities and injuries will be given, including a description of the new NIOSH Fatalities in Oil and Gas Extraction Database (FOG). Second, the panel will discuss a series of deaths (N=9) to workers related to exposure to hydrocarbon gases and vapors; a hazard not previously documented in the oilfield. Third, the panel will provide an overview of fall fatalities during oil and gas extraction, including demographic variables and contributing factors to these incidents. Finally, data gaps and recommendations for prevention will be provided.
