Infectious Disease III - The National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System: Role of State and Local Public Health Jurisdictions

Wednesday, June 22, 2016: 1:00 PM-1:45 PM
Summit Hall 5 (Egan Convention Center)

The National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) tracks changes in antimicrobial susceptibility of enteric bacteria found in humans, retail meats, and food animals. This collaborative effort involves state and local public health departments in addition to federal agencies: CDC, FDA, and USDA. This panel will include an overview of surveillance methods including the role of each federal agency and state partners and will discuss lessons learned during the past two decades. We will provide examples of how NARMS supports national and local outbreak investigations, and how FDA uses data from the program to make regulatory decisions regarding antibiotics. The session will conclude with a discussion on the planned expansion and sources of funding for NARMS activities.
