Brief Summary:
The Council to Improve Foodborne Outbreak Response (CIFOR) is a multidisciplinary collaboration of eight diverse national associations and three federal agencies whose goal is to improve epidemiologic, laboratory and environmental health methods at the local, state, and federal levels to detect, investigate, control, and prevent foodborne disease. The food industry is represented on the CIFOR Industry Workgroup. In 2016 CIFOR adopted a new 5-yr strategic plan that created four Development Teams to more effectively identify barriers and develop appropriate projects. The Identify Development Team is conducting an overall gap analysis of foodborne disease outbreak detection and investigation systems and conducting focus groups of physicians about their knowledge, attitudes and practices related to stool testing and culture independent diagnostic tests. The Lead Development Team is producing guidelines on foodborne illness complaint systems, finalizing the Outbreaks of Undetermined Etiology Guidelines and beginning the production of the CIFOR Guidelines 3rd Edition. The Promote Development Team is revising the CIFOR Clearinghouse, the CIFOR website and producing a formal Marketing Plan for CIFOR products. The Evaluate Development Team is comparing metrics across many foodborne disease programs to update CIFOR metrics and is developing a framework for outbreak After Action Review (AAR) which will be used at CIFOR meetings and other settings.
