Whitewater, The Grove Hotel
Holly B Hedegaard , Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Hyattsville, MD
Renee L Johnson , Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA

Key Objectives:

  1. To become familiar with the tools and guidance documents currently available to assist epidemiologists and researchers in the analysis of injury morbidity data coded in ICD-10-CM
  2. To discuss common issues or problems in working with ICD-10-CM coded data
  3. To identify additional tools, guidance documents or other resources needed by the injury epidemiology community
  4. To begin to develop a plan for routine updating of existing tools

Brief Summary:
The transition from the use of ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM for coding injury morbidity has raised several challenges for injury epidemiologists who analyze ICD-coded hospital discharge and emergency department data sets for surveillance and research. This roundtable discussion provides an opportunity to hear about the tools that have been developed to aid in this transition, as well as to raise questions and share lessons learned. Tools that are currently available include proposed case definitions and analysis and reporting frameworks. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences in using the tools, identify common problems and concerns, and discuss possible solutions. Participants are encouraged to provide feedback on additional tools or assistance that might be needed by the injury epidemiology community for standardization and comparability in analysis and reporting. Additionally, as more is learned from use of the existing tools, a plan for routine updating and sharing of the updated tools needs to be developed. Participants will be asked to provide input on when, where and how such updates should occur.
