BACKGROUND: CDC, state health departments and other partners have collaborated in the implementation of the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) Modernization Initiative (NMI). NMI seeks to strengthen and modernize the NNDSS infrastructure to include more comprehensive data and to be based on interoperable, standardized data and exchange mechanisms. The results included standardized message mapping guides for transmitting NNDSS data to CDC, processes to provision that data to the programs, and assistance to health departments in implementing the messages.
METHODS: The Message Validation, Processing and Provisioning System (MVPS) is the software that CDC developed to receive and process HL7-formatted NNDSS transmissions. In December 2016, MVPS implemented functionality for the Generic V2 and Hepatitis case notification messages and has been successfully processing and provisioning this data to the CDC programs since that time. The enhanced Message Evaluation and Testing Service (METS) provides health jurisdictions with feedback as they develop disease-specific messages. The MVPS Quality Assurance Dashboard provides submitters with feedback on their data. Information will be presented on lessons learned from development, feedback on submitted NNDSS messages, planned update that will increase system flexibility and shorten the implementation time for new conditions and other planned MVPS enhancements.
RESULTS: Recent MVPS accomplishments include the implementation of functionality to process new messages and enhancements to increase system flexibility and shorten implementation time. Lessons learned from recent development and a summary of planned MVPS enhancements will be shared.
CONCLUSIONS: At the conclusion of this session attendees will be able to: 1. Identify current state of public health informatics capabilities and capacities at the federal, state, and local level. 2. Understand enhanced features in MVPS that will help them improve the quality of the NNDSS data they submit. 3. Implement best practices when processing successful HL7-formatted NNDSS transmissions.
