Flu Near You (FNY) is a participatory surveillance system that enables the public to report symptoms of disease via an online tool. HealthMap of Boston Children’s Hospital and the Skoll Global Threat Fund (SGTF) have partnered to leverage modern technology, allowing users to complete weekly surveys on symptoms via email or smartphone application to contribute to the tracking of influenza-like illness at the community level. In operation since 2011, FNY data has demonstrated strong correlation with CDC surveillance systems, while potentially capturing a medically unattended portion of the population experiencing ILI. HealthMap and SGTF have also worked to provide state and local health departments access to aggregate data from FNY to enhance existing surveillance. This session will showcase the experiences of state and local health departments who have leveraged FNY alongside existing ILI surveillance, as well as assess the utility of FNY and other participatory surveillance methods.
