The Meaningful Use regulations, part of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) helped accelerate health information technology (HIT) adoption in the past several years. These HIT initiatives and others have resulted in increased access to health care data by state and local health departments. This workshop will provide an overview of the status of HIT initiatives and the challenges and opportunities for using health care data for public health. Topics will include transformation of the health care delivery system and increasing focus on population health, quality measurement (QM) to improve health, opportunities for epidemiologists to contribute to the QM process, and measure development and reporting on population health. The workshop will be tailored for chronic disease epidemiologists and will emphasize practical applications and benefits afforded through health care transformation and HIT adoption, and building the analytic data management (ADM) capacity necessary to fully realize these new opportunities.
