BACKGROUND: As in past challenging situations in relation to infectious diseases and other threats, the public response in the United States to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa once again raised questions about effective risk communication. This session will review the nature of the inherent response of humans to threats and evidence-based approaches to communicating the facts that people want and need without generating undesirable and unforeseen consequences that are detrimental to the public health response. The panel will discuss the lessons learned from the Ebola response and suggest improvements in how communication is done under similar circumstances.
